Diane Alber‘s 2019 picture book A Little Spot of Anger: A Story About Managing BIG Emotions is what I call a functional picture book.
The subtitle gives the purpose: the goal is to give kids tools to deal with strong emotions, specifically anger. It introduces the idea of the (green) peaceful spot and the (red) anger spot, then briefly introduces tools (identifying, counting, tapping, breathing) for dealing with anger. It then walks kids through some common scenarios when anger might show up, and guides them through dealing with it.
The illustrations are simple, but clear and colorful.
Personally, I think it minimizes how powerfully emotions can hit kids, but for the lesser situations, this might help.
Oh, I have to admit: I picked this book up because Alber self-published it, as well as a number of other books, and was curious how she succeeded. Judging by her website, I would have to say main ways: serving a community in multiple ways (books, videos, training), laser focus on that community and service, and…merchandise. (You can buy plush/squishy toys like the spots.)
