Pascale Estellon’s Orange Is an Apricot, Green Is a Tree Frog : Explore the Natural World Through Color is another entry in my foray into orange. And it is a good one. This picture book (published in French in 2020, in English in 2021) is lovely and useful.
It walks readers through colors, giving red, orange, yellow, blue, green, black, and white four pages each. The first page introduces the color in a number of circles showing variations on each: light green, dark green, etc. The next three pages give labeled examples from the natural world of each color. That’s where we get the apricot and tree frog of the title, as well as blue dasher butterflies, black radishes, and so on.
Most of the colors are presented simply, on a clean white background; the white wonders are shown against black, for contrast.
The book is simple, but will appeal to parents and teachers who are teaching colors, and kids who like color and/or enjoy the natural world.
