I love David Shannon’s David books so much, I wanted to see what his other works are like. So, I picked up his 2016 picture book Duck on a Tractor.
The pictures are wonderful. Any kid–shoot, any adult–will enjoy seeing this vivid images of farm animals riding on a tractor (with the duck driving, of course). The colors, the action, the composition, all of these are wonderful.
The idea (a duck decides to drive a tractor, the other animals join in) is good–very picture book appropriate.
The writing, though, is not as strong as in the David books. It is a wordier, and not as engaging.
That still puts it head and shoulders–or beak and feathers, for the duck–above most picture books, but it is no David book.
