Ah! This book was a pleasure.
The images are perfectly designed: bold colors, simple faces with expressions that are easy to read, backgrounds that change from blue on one page to orange on the next, and, of course, a seemingly endless string of silly animals sitting in ridiculous ways on ridiculous things.
The visuals work perfectly with the words, which blend two types of structures, both of which kids will be able to follow easily, and both of which are set up in the title itself: question and answer, and rhyme. There’s also some use of surprising or less common works (fajitas, gnus, etc.).
This is a perfect picture book of its kind. Kids could flip through it on their own and love the illustrations, but it cries out to be read aloud, time and again, and soon kids will be chanting lines along with you.
Kes and Claire Gray’s 2016 picture book Dog On a Frog? (illustrated by Jim Field) was originally published in Great Britain under the title Oi Dog! It won the Lollies (Laugh Out Loud) in 2017 in the picture book category. Clearly, I’m late to the party…but this is good stuff.
