Oh No! gets a big oh yes! from me.

Oh No! (Or how my science project destroyed the world) is a 2010 picture book written by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Dan Santat…but it is secretly an old creature feature monster movie converted into a colorful picture book.

In just a few well-chosen words per page and large, vivid illustrations, it tells the story of how a young scientist forget to install a few qualities in her robot, allowing it to go rogue and threaten humanity (or at least the city). To deal with that, the inventor enlarges a toad to Godzilla size, and a chaotic battle ensues. And then…

Good stuff. It is easy to see why Barnett is the U.S. National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, and why he’s won major awards in the field (and why Santat has won such major awards as well).

Vivid fun.
