Chelsea M. Campbell’s 2025 picture book When You Go to Dragon School is a pleasant book. It has a simple premise: the regular school is too crowded, so a bunch of kids go to dragon school. This is a school for dragons, so the human kids are pleasingly out of place. They meet a bunch of dragons, and there’s a lot of light comparison between what dragons do and are like and what humans do and are like, with a few twists along the way to show similarities. (Apparently, it is important for dragons to brush their teeth, just as it is important for humans.)

The kids find ways to get along, fit in (mostly), and have fun, and Charlene Chua’s colorful and cartoonish dramatize the action usefully, making sure to keep everything safe. I accent this because the scenario could be terrifying: kids surrounded by dragons could be dangerous and overwhelming.

This, though, is a light romp.
