Since I’m working on a picture book built around reworking a classic song, I’m reading picture books built around songs. Recently I read Eve Bunting’s take on “Hey Diddle Diddle,” and today I’m looking at another retelling.
This one is the 2022 board book version by Yu-hsuan Huang. It re-tells/represents the nursery rhyme. The images are bright, smiling, and friendly, and seem aimed at the younger readers who would read board books. The main draw would the book’s moveable elements: starting with the cover, the book has sliders, letting kids move elements through simple, repeated motions. For example, on the cover kids would move the cow to jump in a short arc over the moon.
This will work best for kids who already know the verse, and who are still young readers.
