Get Me Out of This Book: Rules & Tools For Being Brave is surprisingly good.

I say “surprisingly” because I often find picture books with clear instructional goals ineffective, even irritating, but authors Kalli Dakos and Deborah Cholette pull it off. Some of this is because the instruction itself (on how to be brave) is necessary, but more is how it is presented.

I’ve read books about books (and multiple about pens, pencils, or crayons), but this is the first I’ve read with a bookmark for a main character, so, originality, always good. But it is really the scenarios Max the bookmark faces, and, especially, the varied, inventive, and colorful illustrations by Sara Infante. These give us a bookmark with facial expressions and, more important for readers, really good, threatening monsters!

The result is both helpful and fun.
