Someone mentioned Blueberries for Sal today, and I realized I hadn’t read it for years.
That’s not really a surprise. It came out in 1948, and so was old before I was born. But it is a classic for a reason, and if you don’t know the title, you might know another book by the same author (Robert McCloskey): his 1941 picture book Make Way for Ducklings.
The books are similar in pace, and in the limited colors used in the illustration, but I actually think the voice of Blueberries for Sal is better. It is gentle, and really fits the family exploration (and mishap) story of the book. If you haven’t read/heard it, do.
